Perinatal Mental Health Environment Scan
Healthy Mothers Healthy Babies conducted a Maternal Mental Health Environmental Scan to deepen our understanding of the gaps in access to mental health care for pregnant and postpartum people living in the Albany, Atlanta, and Columbus perinatal regions. Additionally, we aimed to increase the knowledge of current screening, medication, and education practices during the perinatal period.
The scan included a survey and interviews with maternal mental health providers, focus groups with pregnant and postpartum people, and a secondary quantitative review of mental health resources. We hope that the results from the scan will help to inform programmatic and policy solutions.

Know Your Rights: The Impact of the Federal PWFA on Georgia's Pregnant Workers
This new law provides groundbreaking protections for pregnant, postpartum, and pumping workers, and gives you the right to get accommodations at work that will help you keep your job and protect your health. The law also gives you the right to things like extra breaks, flexible scheduling to attend doctors appointments, time off to recover from childbirth or miscarriage, light duty, remote work, and much more. Join us on July 27th from 4:00pm-5:30 PM to learn more about how the PWFA will impact Georgia's pregnant workers. We will be joined by our partners at A Better Balance and Small Business Majority.
Medicaid Redetermination Legislator Briefing
For the past three years, under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act, Georgia Medicaid members have been eligible for continuous coverage. Recently, the federal government has required all states, including Georgia, to begin checking eligibility for Medicaid. We will be hosting a webinar to help legislators, advocates, and partners understand the impact of redetermination on mothers and infants in our state.
There is much more to learn about this process, and we hope to make this information readily available for policy makers as they work to provide for their districts. We hope to see you there!
Please reach out to Madison Scott madison.scott@hmhbga.org with any questions or concerns about the information provided.

Medicaid Doula Pilot - Findings and Looking Forward
We completed a doula Medicaid reimbursement pilot in partnership with Care Management Organizations (CMO’s) to explore: The health outcomes of moms, birth givers, and babies participating in Medicaid, who are living in Georgia and the best process for reimbursing doulas to promote their economic security and retention in the healthcare workforce in Georgia.
The findings from this pilot will inform HMHBGA’s efforts to expand access to these services and provide insights for the best process for engaging doulas in the formal healthcare sector— for example, possibly through the legislature to adopt permanently adopting legislation to cover full spectrum doula services during the prenatal and postpartum period through Medicaid. The pilot primarily aims to improve maternal and child health outcomes by increasing the support birth-givers receive.
We will be hosting a presentation to share these findings with the community, and answer questions from partners about doulas, the findings, and next steps on this issue. Please register for the event below!
